In the ten years since his classic Kitchen Confidential first alerted us to the idiosyncrasies and lurking perils of eating out, from Monday fish to the breadbasket conspiracy, much has changed for the subculture of chefs and cooks, for the restaurant business—and for Anthony Bourdain.
Medium Raw explores these changes, moving back and forth from the author's bad old days to the present. Tracking his own strange and unexpected voyage from journeyman cook to globe-traveling professional eater and drinker, and even to fatherhood, Bourdain takes no prisoners as he dissects what he's seen, pausing along the way for a series of confessions, rants, investigations, and interrogations of some of the most controversial figures in food.
We started the First Wednesday Book Club in 2007, when we realized that we weren't the only ones dying to sit down to talk about books -- our customers were, too!
Still free and open to the public, the book club meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 pm at the store. At each meeting, we vote on the book for the next month.
We read mostly novels, occasionally short stories or non-fiction, and anyone can make a recommendation. When it formed, the members decided not to elect a leader but rather have the discussion develop organically. That said, we welcome any outside sources (author's biography, historical context, book reviews) which might help us better understand the text or provide a point for discussion.
See the book for the upcoming meeting, as well as some we've read in the past.

March 2010
We're using this month's pick as an excuse to take advantage of the MFAH's guided tours for book clubs. We'll use their discussion guide, then we'll visit the museum to look at works of art in the museum’s collection in connection with the book.
On Thursday, March 11 at 7 pm, we'll meet in the lobby of the Law Building (1001 Bissonnet) for the guided tour of the MFAH. If you'd like to join us, please RSVP to claire@brazosbookstore.com so we know how many people to expect. Hope you can make it!
